Coronis Pursued by Neptune, Impeded by Minerva
Etching, 1724, Nagler 4, LeBlanc 4, 285 x 217 mm. Vieira was born in Lisbon, Portugal and studied in Rome with Luti and Trevisani. His etched output was small (Nagler and LeBlanc list only seven prints) and this one is considered his finest work. The subject is drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Minerva transforming Coronis into a bird to escape from Neptune. A fine, strong impression on laid paper trimmed mostly just outside the borderline and laid down to another sheet, but with the following defects: the tablet over-wiped in part, blurring or removing the top part of the text; the paper cut just into the image in the top right quadrant and a tiny bit at the bottom right. The print is quite rare and desirable; an impression in better condition was recently sold at auction for 3000 Euros.
