A Hand Holding a Cigar
Original drawing in brush and brown ink on wove paper (actually, the verso of a statement form from the Artists Union of Massachusetts) laid down to board, 210 x 137 mm., signed in ink. Levine, too neglected for too many years, was a painter and printmaker of social realism and considerable political content, perhaps secondarily, of biblical scenes.
Gangsters, politicians, workers and rabbis fill his works, sometime realistically portrayed, frequently manneristically distorted. The present sketch appears to be a study for the left hand of the figure in the oil painting The Millionaire, ca. 1938.
