Etching with touches of engraving, Chu (The Illustrated Bartsch, Vol. 121) 63 only state, 94 x 71 mm. A very fine, delicate impression on laid paper, trimmed on the plate mark, the tip of the upper right corner thin. Denon, a writer, diplomat and Egyptologist as well as an artist, was the first director of the Louvre Museum, appointed by Napoléon. The Denon wing of the museum is named for him. Print making was among the least of his accomplishments, although over 500 prints have been traced to his hand and many others after his designs. These range from reproductive works after old master drawings and prints, through archaeological studies, portraits and genre prints to sexually explicit images. It is the work of a talented man who is amusing himself (and others) rather than that of a dedicated artist. But many of the prints have charm (like this one), a quality not always found in the work of more serious artists.
