Venus After Her Bath
Engraving, Bartsch 297B, 160 x 131 mm., ex collection: K. E. von Liphardt (Lugt 1687). Generally fine and early impression on thin laid paper, trimmed slightly on three sides, tiny holes and old creases. It is a rare, early copy in reverse of Marcantonio’s engraving, Bartsch 297, according to Bartsch, “supremely well engraved by an engraver of great merit.” Presumably, we will never know who that engraver was (could it have been Marcantonio himself?), but the print is beautiful and the copy may well be rarer than the original.
