Other Images:
Etchings and engravings, Populus 221a iii/iii and 225a iii/iii, 302 x 188mm. Fine impressions on laid paper with large margins ; dirt or stains in the margins. The set was a collection of six designs for tapestry hangings for doorways, one of the many practical uses for ornament prints. Gillot was an eminent French painter and engraver and theatrical designer, though perhaps best known as the teacher of Watteau. Although his name does not appear on the sheet, the first print here was actually completed by Charles Nicolas Cochin, le fils. The second one was fully engraved by Cochin (who is credited on the print) in reverse of the unfinished plate by Gillot himself. Only a single impression is known of the latter. Sold as a pair.
