A Grove of Trees in a Landscape
Original drawing in pencil and white gouache on brown paper, 254 x 307 mm., signed in pencil with his monogram. Camille Benoit, not to be confused with the later composer and art dealer of the same name, was a painter of animals and landscapes, born in Lille. Like almost all the French artists of his time, he really knew how to draw. This essentially simple but neatly finished sketch has an elegance about it that would do credit to many a more famous artist. French 19th-century art is filled with such little treasures for those who look at images rather than at names.
