Portrait of a Lady
Original drawing in charcoal on brownish laid paper backed with heavier paper, 504 x 405 mm., lightly inscribed “Mr. Bontwood,” perhaps the name of the man who commissioned it.
Good was born in England but his artistic training and career were entirely in the United States. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and with George Bellows and N. C. Wyeth. Although he painted oils and watercolors, Good is known primarily as an illustrator of books. The portrait here, life size, is not flattering but probing and sympathetic. It has real quality.
