Etching and drypoint, 1918, 291 x 239 mm. Fine impression on laid paper with full margins, signed and titled in pencil; the paper browned on the reverse. For better or for worse, the image is Paunzen’s visual interpretation of the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, the “Pastoral.” It may be Paunzen’s Viennese background that is responsible for all these dancing couples expressing Beethoven’s “cheerful feelings upon arriving in the country,” but this was far from his only musical interpretation, and his visual images called on many unexpected subjects.
