Destruction of an Ancient City
Fine, rich impression on wove paper with full margins, signed, dated and titled in pencil. Barring a misreading of the signature, the only information we have been able to glean about this print and artist is what is penciled on the impression. And yet this seems to be no amateur effort, but a skilled and effective drypoint of a complex and terrifying scene: mass destruction, a raging fire, hundreds of nude, anguished figures and the traces of a retreating army on horseback in the distance. Harry G. Berman was an American Impressionist painter, and, as a printmaker, a producer of dark and disturbing images. He studied and worked in Philadelphia (the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a number of his prints), served in World War I and died, tragically young, of tuberculosis.
