Ornamented Fountain with Hunters and Their Quarry

Etching, ca.1598, from Architectura, Holstein 17, 250 x 184 mm. Dietterlin, who spent most of his life in Strassbourg, was a painter, printmaker and architectural theoretician. Only one of his paintings survives and he is best known as the author of Architectura, a collection of some of the weirdest, most grotesque architectural designs, Mannerist bordering on the Baroque, ever committed to paper. This plate is hardly an exception. Among the dozens of intricately entwined hunters, weapons, animals and fish one literally has to search for the fountain itself, where the water comes from and where it goes. Even for his time, the man was far out. Fine impression on laid paper with good margins; some dust in the margins.
