Piranesi, Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo

Etching, 1750, from Vedute di Roma, 406 x 545 mm., Hind 14 v/vii. Fine, clear impression from the first Paris edition on heavy laid paper with good margins; remains of old glue stains in the margins and verso. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Monte Santo is at the left, Santa Maria de Miracoli at the right and the Egyptian obelisk in the center. The streets today are where they were, but now paved and filled with cars and buses and they seem considerably narrower and less grand than in Piranesi’s view. In fact, it takes a certain stretch of the imagination to stand today by the obelisk and see the scene through Piranesi’s eyes. Keep your photographs; his view was so much better.
