Design for the Title Page of “Frammenti di Ornato”
Original drawing in black chalk and watercolor, ca. 1783, 115 x 170 mm. Finished and evocative study on laid paper laid down to an old mount, apparently the study for the title page of Panfili’s 1783 book, though here with a slightly botched title ( perhaps added later in pencil): "Fagmenti di Ornato." The design shows a pyramidal tomb in back, a block-like cenotaph to the left, and a half buried marble panel with the inscription, all of them reminiscent of the tombs and antiquities along the Appian Way. Panfili worked mostly in Bologna as an ornament and perspective painter and engraver. While there is an old attribution to him on the back of the mount and the titles are close to one another, one cannot rule out the possibility that this drawing is by a Roman artist. Framed.
