Etching, 1751, from Vedute di Roma, 412 x 547 mm., Hind 16 iv/vi. A fine, sharp impression from a lifetime Roman edition (before erasure of the price), on heavy laid paper with good margins; flattened center fold and a piece of old tape verso. Rome’s outdoor public living room, established on the site of the former Stadium of Domitian (1st Century AD), is much as it was in Piranesi’s time, but for paving and the transformation of the simple fountain in the foreground of the print into The Fountain of Neptune (1874) as it is today. The architecture is largely Baroque, Piranesi’s era, rather than ancient, leaving him no reason to magnify or mystify it, but simply to present it as he saw it.
