Mezzotint, 1799, 468 x 604 mm., Frankau N.D., LeBlanc N.D. Fine, soft and atmospheric impression on laid paper, trimmed just to the subject but with the full text below and apparently an open-letter proof; the paper slightly yellowed. Smith, who was a painter as well as one of the finest mezzotint artists of the century, was a close friend of Morland and translated many of the latter’s paintings into prints. Morland specialized in painting the life that he knew: the country, the farmers, the animals, always with sympathy, occasionally with too high a sugar content. This print, oddly overlooked by the principal cataloguers is among the most attractive of these country studies. The ferns are being gathered here (women’s work at the time), but also burned. This was to gather potash from the ashes, a vital ingredient in the manufacture of both soap and glass.
