The Pantheon (Exterior)
Etching, 1761, from Vedute di Roma, 475 x 693 mm., Hind 60 iii/v. Fine impression from the first Paris edition, on heavy laid paper without apparent watermark, with good margins; the usual trace of a vertical center fold, old glue stains verso and a couple in the margins, the image clean and fresh. Unlike many of Piranesi's architectural studies, the building here takes up virtually the entire image space, emphasizing the massiveness of the structure. Agrippa's original Pantheon was destroyed in a fire in the year 80 AD. It was rebuilt according to the original plans in 125 AD and has been in continuous use since then -- as a pagan temple and, since the 7th century, as a church. It is one of the greatest surviving Roman buildings and probably the best preserved of all of them.
