Quand l’Hymen Dort, l’Amour Veille (When Marriage Sleeps, Love Wakes)
Stipple engraving printed in colors, ca. 1760, 400 x 466 mm., Portalis & Béraldi III-744 (this print cited). A fine impression on laid paper with thread margins most of the way around; a small burn (?) and hole in blank paper. One of the odder elements of the French Rococo was the effort to imitate English styles of print making, as, for example, the stipple engraving. This superb example printed from a single plate, which had to be painted afresh with the colors for each impression taken (à la poupée), is one of the finest of its type. Challe is a well-known artist, originally for his Piranesi-like architectural studies, but Mauclair is sufficiently obscure so that we do not even know his first name. Nevertheless, the print itself is famous. Another impression is currently being offered elsewhere at more than double this price.
