A Game Market
Mezzotint, 1783, 420 x 578 mm., LeBlanc 100, Wessely 109 ii/ii. A fine, sharp impression on laid paper with good margins all around; light foxing in the margins and lower plate margin and a dot of brown in the text area. Mezzotint, especially in Britain, developed in the eighteenth century into a virtuosic technique, especially effective in the translation of oil paintings into black and white prints. Every degree on the grey scale could be realized and the effect was far truer to the original than even the most masterful engraver or etcher could achieve. Naturally, then, the repertoire was expanded from images of contemporary concern (mostly portraits of the rich and famous) to the re-presentation of the old masters. Snyders and Boekhorst (known and credited here as Long John) created a set of four still-lives called The Markets and Earlom, with consummate skill, made mezzotints of all. This is the first of the set, and the textures and “colors” of plumages and fur, wicker baskets and wood trestles are an object lesson in virtuosic technique.
