Etching, 1773, 250 x 200 mm., LeBlanc 2. Fine impression on laid paper with narrow margins (or re-margined); the paper lightly toned and a tear and loss in blank paper at the lower left corner. Bretherton was known for a number of things, including deceptively close copies of Rembrandt etchings – which must have been lucrative at the time. But his true métier was satirical work and it was on a high level indeed, if often a bit subtler than that of some of his contemporaries. The contrast between the “Spirituale” of the title and the gross or dandyish appearance of these three musicians (oboe, cello and valveless horn) is quite enough to make the point here. The image is well enough known to be currently offered on the market as a giclee reproduction. This, however, is the original etching.
