Veduta di Villa Madama
Etching, 1725, from Varie Vedute, Le Blanc 10 i/ii, 134 x 193 mm., ex collection: Alianello (Lugt 5k). A very fine impression on laid paper with large margins; a few, small brown ink stains in the lower margin. The Villa Madama itself, on the slopes of Monte Mario on the northern edge of Rome, was designed by Raphael for Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici. Anesi’s view, however, is of a portion of the park only and, in his time, the villa and the grounds, while still the property of the Farnese family, had been allowed to fall into ruins. From the view he gives, it was a place for pleasant walking and sketching, enhanced by crumbling stone walls and temporary structures. Today, the Villa Madama, completely restored, is the exclusive and restricted property of the Italian government and used for international guests and press conferences. LeBlanc cites these etchings, particularly in the first state before erasure of the number, as rare.
