Das Mädchen bei der Urne
Etching, 1767, 222 x 157 mm., Andresen 20 ii/ii, Nagler 2, Gerard 24. A good impression on laid paper with a small margin at the bottom, trimmed just inside the platemark elsewhere; small repaired tear, two wormholes at the bottom and two tiny surface abrasions at the upper left corner. Kauffman, born in Switzerland of Austrian parents and raised in Austria was something of a social phenomenon of the eighteenth century. Talented linguistically, musically and artistically, blessed with charm and good looks, she was a figure of adulation already at twelve. She had a successful career as a painter of both portraits and history and became one of two women artists elected to the British Royal Academy. She made a number of attractive original etchings which, though, are outnumbered by the many prints made by others after her designs. These latter, by Bartolozzi, Cipriani and others are still collected today, but it is her original prints, such as this one, that are in continuous demand.
