Deux Femmes sur un Nuage

Etching, 163 x 112 mm., Baudicour 22 ; Robert-Dumesnil 22 i/ii ; Wildenstein XI i/ii. A fine impression before the number on laid paper trimmed just inside the plate mark but with white space all around the image and letters; the upper-right corner tip is thin. The work is an etched translation of a painting by Liberi in the Palazzo Rezonico in Venice. The great majority of Fragonard's original etchings derive from his Italian travels and are interpretations of Italian paintings. The amazing thing about them is how, through his hands, an often heavy Italian baroque image becomes transformed into a light and airy French rococo one while remaining relatively faithful to the original in detail.
