The Holy Family Passing a Statue, the Head of Which Falls to the Ground

Etching, 1753, from Idée Pittoresche sopra la Fugga in Egito, De Vesme 22, Rizzi 88 ii/ii, 184 x 236 mm., ex collections: J. W. Nahl (Lugt 1954); Leonard Baskin (not in Lugt). Fine impression on laid paper without apparent watermark, trimmed to or inside the platemark but with a white margin outside the border line all around. The number 22, which identifies the second state, has been scraped but is still visible. The Flight into Egypt inspired Domenico to a series of twenty-four different images, not one of them even hinted at in scripture. This one, ultimately derives from an apocryphal gospel that tells that when the Holy Family entered a temple in Egypt, the statues of the pagan gods fell to the ground. Here the surroundings are countryside and the head of the statue has yet to hit the ground -- as seen by its shadow on the stone below. Joseph turns to look at it.
