Etching, 1716, from a set of Six Landscapes, 141 x 189 mm., Andresen 4, LeBlanc 4. A fine, dark impression on laid paper with good margins from the first edition as published by Ostertag in Regensburg. Von Bemmel, not to be confused with his Dutch father, the seventeenth-century artist Willem van Bemmel, continued in Germany the earlier Dutch tradition of landscape both in painting and prints, a genre he passed on to his two artist sons. Though hardly an important artist, and in no way a ground-breaking one, his work was always competent and attractive and filled a niche in German art that was, for a time, virtually vacant. Dietrich, Kolbe, Weirotter and the Kobells came in the next generation.
