Jeune Fille à la Cage
Crayon-manner engraving in red and brown-black, 300 x 210 mm., Leymarie 102; Jean-Richard 678. Fine, fresh impression on thick laid paper with full margins ; the margins slightly dusty and with a repaired tear not affecting the image space. A typical Boucher genre subject, the pretty girl attempting to capture the bird before the cat is aware of it, it is handled here with consummate skill by Demarteau.
Crayon-manner engraving, of which he and his son were masters, was a technique invented to reproduce precisely the very texture of a chalk drawing, so that one could over-mat the platemark and letters and frame it under glass, and no one would ever know that you did not have an original Boucher drawing ( and with considerable saving of money). Such prints have been in and out of vogue over the years, but they are a very real, and very lovely, part of the history of print making in the eighteenth century.
