Color tool-work engravings, ca. 1795, 419 x 483 mm., Portalis & Béraldi 8. Fine impressions with vibrant colors (one plate with added hand coloring in yellow) on thick wove paper with the full plate margins, showing the registration marks and showing the plate mark in places; versos and edges browned, a few fox marks, one plate with repaired edge damages not affecting the image. Paul et Virginie was a novel by Bernardin de Saint Pierre, first published in 1787. Partaking somewhat of Rousseau’s “noble savage” idea, it takes place on the island of Mauritius (then called the Île de France), and concerns itself with young love, slavery, shipwreck, death and the social evils of civilization. Dated now, it was incredibly popular in its time and also gave rise to a number of independently produced works of art based on its incidents, of which this set is one of the best. Descourtis was a master of the color print produced with multiple plates and many of his works are among the outstanding graphic productions of the French eighteenth century. We know he learned the technique from Janinet, but we know virtually nothing else about him, and his works have never been fully catalogued. Sold as a set.
