Etching and engraving, 1777, 337 x 425 mm., LeBlanc 9, Bocher 12 iii/iii. Very fine impression, with a range of tone, on laid paper with good margins ; minor spotting verso and a few small marginal edge tears repaired. The scene, though it must have been common in Catholic France in the eighteenth century, is not one often pictured in art. The young girl stands, among a crowd of her peers and her elders, and gives the memorized answers to the posed, traditional questions of the priest. Though a quasi-religious subject, the picture is as much about dress and style as it is of contemporary religious mores. Moitte was a superb engraver. Baudouin, the son-in-law of François Boucher, was a skilled and highly popular painter. Oddly, considering the subject depicted here, his paintings were condemned by both the Archbishop of Paris and Denis Diderot, the founder and editor of the Encyclopédie, for their “immorality”.
