Mezzotint, 188 x 152 mm. Wessely p. 94, no. 133. Very fine impression on laid paper with narrow margins; old mounting paper verso at all corners, one of them perhaps masking a small repaired tear. The print was originally catalogued by Wessely as by Wallerant Vaillant, but corrected by him to Stolker. Mezzotint was invented and developed in the Netherlands before it became a British passion in the eighteenth century. But the virtuosity and perfection brought to it by many British artists was matched by several contemporary Flemish and Dutch artists, albeit with often drastically different subject matter. The young man, or boy, here is clearly of a peasant type. His left hand is apparently grasping the handle of a hurdy-gurdy hidden under his cloak.
