Mezzotint, 241 x 198 mm., LeBlanc 82, Portalis & Béraldi 1, ex collection : Soliman Lieutaud (Lugt 2360). Fine impression on laid paper trimmed just inside the platemark ; some surface rubbing. Boucher, of course, was one of the most successful painters of the royal court, creator of innumerable erotic nymphs and peasant girls and chubby cherubs. He was good friends with Roslin, who did the original portrait that was the model for this print. Mezzotint was not a common technique in France at the time (it was a British passion), but the Gautier-Dagoty family made something of a specialty of it, including some rather wild anatomical studies. All of their prints are apparently rare today. Lieutaud, from whose collection this impression comes, was a portrait painter himself, but also a great expert (and there was much to know) on French engraved and etched portraits.
