Etching, 1775, from Vedute di Roma, 475 x 715 mm., Hind 121 i/iii. A generally fine impression of this heavily-worked plate from the first Paris edition which was also the first edition, on laid paper with good margins; flattened center fold, printer’s crease bottom center with no loss of ink, two small brown spots in the sky at the right. The Island of the Tiber, the only island in the river, arose, according to legend, when after the fall of the tyrant Tarquinius Superbus (6th Century B.C.) the Romans threw his body into the Tiber, where silt was deposited around it and eventually formed the island. Whatever the legend, the island has been linked to the rest of Rome since antiquity and the bridge at the right, the Ponte Fabricio or, as Piranesi called it, the Quattro Cappi, is the only original bridge left in Rome. The island today is much sanitized from Piranesi’s time, but it perhaps never had quite that brooding mystery with which he invested this image.
