Bust of a Man in a Feathered Turban
Etching with brown wash and white gouache, 86 x 76 mm., LeBlanc 13 (?), ex collection: Heinrich Füssli & Cie. (Lugt 1008). England had a Rembrandt revival in the eighteenth century and one of the most active figures in it was Thomas Worlidge. Worlidge copied Rembrandt paintings and prints, did variations on them and composed original works in Rembrandt’s style (though not of his quality). This little oddity, derived ultimately from Rembrandt’s oriental heads, has been painted over with a pale brown wash and heightened with white gouache to give it something of the appearance of a drawing. While not a unique usage of such a technique (“painted prints” have a long and distinguished tradition), the restriction of the coloring to brown and white and the object’s appearance in the context of the English Rembrandt revival are, to say the least, quirky.
