Emblem Medalion for Gaetano Vitali

Original drawing in pen and black ink, ca. 1790, 79 x 55 mm. Tiny, exquisite drawing on thin laid paper, the verso rubbed with red chalk for transfer, this medallion may have been meant as a bookplate design. It expresses an image of Minerva, goddess of wisdom, with her attributes of helmet, shield, spear and owl, and it may have been made for a noted intellectual and professor of logic and metaphysics, Gaetano Vitali, who was active in Rimini. Novelli, while a noted painter in his native Venice, was constantly involved as a draughtsman in designs for literary publications, theater, and other small projects and such designs as this are well within his métier. The sheet derives from a numbered collection of his drawings (this one No. 49) broken up some years ago.
