Soft-ground etching in sepia, 147 x 110 mm., LeBlanc 7. Fine impression on laid paper, laid down to wove, trimmed just outside the borderline but with the signature below; a repaired tear or crease at the lower right. Portugal’s contribution to eighteenth-century graphic arts was not extensive but included at least seven prints by Vieira de Matos. The artist was born in Lisbon but studied in Italy with Luti and Trevisani and seems to have straddled the Baroque and the Rococo in his style and subject matter, now leaning one way, now the other. This very attractive little print is rather in the Morland genre (perhaps better done than most of Morland’s) and with a more Italian or Iberian character.
