Bien Tirada Está (It’s Nicely Stretched)
Aquatint and etching from Los Caprichos (plate 17), 1799, 215 x 153 mm., Delteil 54, Harris 52 iii/iii, First Edition. Goya’s Caprichos were the last great prints of the eighteenth century and pointed the direction to a different way of viewing the world: frank, realistic, sometimes brutal. Goya’s commentary on this print: “Oh! The bawdy old woman is no fool. She knows quite well what is wanted and that the stockings must fit tightly.” A very fine impression from the first edition, on laid paper with good margins on three sides, trimmed along the platemark and excellently re-margined with laid paper at the bottom.
