Markham: The Show is Over

The Show is Over

Lithograph, 1936, 427 x 310 mm. Fine impression on wove paper with margins, titled, dated and signed in pencil and with the stamp of the W.P.A. Federal Art Project, N.Y.C. In 1936 Markham joined the W.P.A. and produced a series of lithographs of backstage theater life. The editions are unknown but, as with most W.P.A. prints, impressions are scarce. Markham, a regally beautiful woman, an actress herself as well as self-taught painter and lithographer, had a natural feel for the theater and represented many aspects of it. The image here, of an elderly actor in a deserted theater, is perhaps the most moving.
