Mr. Berry in the Character of Dominic in “The Spanish Fryer” (sic)
Mezzotint, Chaloner Smith 10 only state, 355 x 251 mm. A fine impression on laid paper with margins; a few dots of abrasion in the image, and the final line of the text, the publisher’s address, heavily (and purposely) abraded. The portrait is one of Houston’s most famous plates and is, unusually, reproduced in Chaloner Smith. Edward Berry (1706/7-1760) was an eminent actor on the London stage in the eighteenth century. The Spanish Friar (properly) was a drama with comedic elements by the great poet and playwright John Dryden (1631-1700)
