Design for a Theater Program

Original pencil drawing, ca. 1920, 77 x 115 mm. Ornamental design for the heading of a theater program, with stylized foliage decoration and the masks of tragedy and comedy at the upper corners. On laid paper, presumably torn from a sketchbook; minor stains, creases and a pinhole. Brocard, of whom we know little, was a recognized painter, but seems to have been more active as a designer – of programs, menus, furniture, crockery, wallpaper and decorative hardware – following in the art nouveau tradition of incorporating aesthetic beauty in the design of everyday objects.
