Daumier: Carotte Dramatique

Carotte Dramatique (Couplet au Public)

Lithograph, 1844, 272 x 196 mm., Delteil 1265, Daumier Register 1265 ii/ii. Fine impression on white wove paper with good margins; one line of text imperfectly printed. The newsprint edition was published in Charivari, April 30, 1844. A “carotte” is, essentially, a swindle and this image comes from a set of six “swindles.” The actor sings a final verse to his song, addressed specifically to his audience, praising them, thanking them and asking them for money and applause. In fairness, it should be mentioned that actors in those days were frequently poorly paid and needed to supplement their incomes by any and all means. Daumier at his wittiest, not bitterest.
