Mademoiselle George
Lithograph, ca. 1821, 190 x 155 mm., Delteil (Doubtful Pieces) 9. Delteil is more than doubtful about this lithograph and the preceding one (D. 8) of the same subject; he positively dismisses the possibility that they could be by Delacroix -- but at the same time points out the rarity of both pieces. They are caricatures of Marguerite Josephine Weimer (1787-1867), a famous tragic actress under the stage name of Mlle. George, who created many roles in plays by Victor Hugo and Dumas. The legend below reads “Soleil je te viens voir pour la dernière fois” (Sun, I come to see you for the last time) – Racine: Phèdre. Sad!
