Lady Sarah Lennox, Lady Susan Strangways and Charles James Fox

Mezzotint, 1762, 635 x 430 mm., Goodwin 18 ii/v, Chaloner Smith 91 i/iv, ex collection: Queen Victoria (Lugt 2535). Although the image looks plausibly like a scene from a play, the theatrical connection is actually more tenuous. Fox is persuading his aunt and cousin to attend a rehearsal of Nicholas Rowe’s Jane Shore at an amateur theatrical. Fox is said to be holding the script of the part of Hastings in that play. Rowe (1674-1718) was poet laureate of Britain from 1715 and Jane Shore was his most successful play. A superb proof impression of this eighteenth-century master print, on laid paper trimmed on the platemark, which is visible almost all around; a few tiny edge damages. This impression was formerly in the Royal collection.
