Pencil, and grey wash on thick wove paper, ca. 1921, 326 x 224 mm. A preliminary drawing, double sided, in soft pencil and grey wash, for the etching of the same name (Fletcher 37), signed in pencil and with an illegible dedication. This is an early study, with soft shading and without much detail, which works out the light and shadow of the composition. Brockhurst, who was famous for the immaculate detail and fine finish of his etchings, had quite a different approach to his working drawings, which are usually more in the nature of directions for the production of etchings than finished studies to be etched.
