Mme. Vuillard, Sewing at Her Window
Pencil, Ca. 1923, 167 x 116 mm., from a sketchbook. See Roger Marx: Vuillard, p. 30.
Rapid, pencil sketch on wove paper with perforations at the top, obviously from a sketchbook. Though clearly a first study, the pose of the figure, the furniture, the window and curtains in the drawing show that it is the preliminary study for the
Painting, Mme. Vuillard, Sewing at Her Window, of about 1923, which is illustrated in Roger Marx's book on Vuillard. We have not yet discovered the present whereabouts of the painting. The sheet is signed with Vuillard's monogram stamp; traces of old tape
verso and a few light oil stains near the edges of the sheet.
