Plants Growing in a Field

Black chalk and white heightening on brown wove paper, 160 x 233 mm., signed in pencil. A carefully-observed and meticulously-drawn scene from nature of a variety of growing plants in their natural environment, the drawing clearly was made for its own sake and not as a study for another project. Duclaux, both a painter and printmaker, was born, worked and died in Lyon, but also traveled in Italy and exhibited frequently in both Paris and Lyon. His drawings drew favorable comment from Ingres.
