Two Figures on a Rustic Bridge

Black chalk, with white heightening on blue paper, 1895, 297 x 228 mm. Fine, finished drawing in black chalk and estompe with white heightening on old blue, laid paper, possibly signed in the shadows at the lower right, but certainly completely typical. In a twilight atmosphere, overhanging trees almost envelop a rustic bridge over a stream; a man and woman stand by the bridge railing, a duck swims below. Quite romantic and very lovely. Nanteuil, whose full name was Celestin-François Nanteuil-Leboeuf, was a youthful prodigy, developing a personal and recognizable style quite early on. Originally a student of Ingres, he was clearly a Romantic. He, perhaps, is best known today for his numerous and very effective lithographs.
