Vannutelli, Two Women Seated in a Church

Two Women Seated in a Church

Watercolor over touches of pencil on wove paper, ca. 1870, 380 x 270 mm., signed in red. Large, finished and signed watercolor on thick paper of two women seated in a church near an ornate tomb flanked by corinthian columns and inlaid marble walls. Though the sheet is inscribed "Roma" (Vannutelli was based in Rome), it has been suggested that the scene is the Baptistry in Florence. Vannutelli was a history and genre painter, as well as a portraitist, president of the Artistic Circle of Rome and internationally exhibited and recognized. His works are held by museums in Rome, Florence and Milan. The conjectured date of this sheet is based on the information that it was framed in Boston in 1874.
