Elevation of Saints Before the Holy Trinity and the Virgin

Pen and grey-black ink., 255 x 324 mm., provenance: Henry C. Pitz (?) (not in Lugt). Compositional study on laid paper, the corners clipped. A typically crowded scene with at least two saints, one a bishop, elevated in the clouds, surrounded by dozens of other figures (winged angels and others), above, on a cloud, Christ, God the Father, the Virgin and the Holy Spirit. It is drawn in Spadaro's rapid, scratchy style but shows a clear and wonderful working-out of a complex composition. Though almost certainly a study for a painting, possibly a large wall decoration, the picture is unknown to us. Another, very similar drawing, fully given to Spadaro, was with Pietro Scarpa in Venice some years ago.
