Lepère was a wonderful draughtsman. These instantaneous sketches from life catch costume, pose, depth and motion with the effortlessness of a camera. Although images from Lepère’s sketchbooks frequently turn up as prints or book illustrations, we have not yet located a later incarnation of this one. Not signed, but completely typical and from an assembled collection of Lepère drawings broken up long ago. There is a poorly repaired tear at the lower right.
