Wildens, A Hilly Path

A Hilly Path Near a Town

Black chalk, 183 x 291 mm. Finished, shaded drawing of fine quality on laid paper with the watermark of a bird (?), a small tape stain at the right edge. The reverse of the sheet has an old brown ink attribution to Jacob van Ruisdael, but the free and loose style is far more typical of Flemish landscape drawing than of Dutch. Bernt illustrates a number of drawings by Wildens, two of which (Nos. 687 and 688) show a considerable resemblance to this sheet.
