St. Raymond of Peñafort at Sea

Pen, brown ink and wash over black chalk, 138 x 210 mm., provenance: Janos Scholz.(Lugt 2933b). The documented life of St. Raymond (ca. 1175-1275) has nothing whatever to do with this image, excepting only the Dominican habit. The legend of St. Raymond, though, tells us that he was a favorite of, and frequently accompanied, the King of Aragon. On one trip to Mallorca, Raymond ordered the King to divest himself of sin (a woman with whom the King was temporarily living) or he would leave him. The King, angry, ordered on pain of death that no boat should carry the Dominican from Mallorca. Raymond, then, spread his cloak on the water, tied one end to his staff to make a sail, stepped on it and in six hours went ashore at Barcelona, his feet (and the cloak) not even damp. Such is the scene portrayed here, although we do not know the identity of Raymond’s companion. The drawing, previously attributed to Paolo’s father, Domenico Piola, may be compared stylistically with several in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
