Stage Set: Courtyard of a Farm

Brown ink and grey wash on laid paper, 235 x 331 mm. Fluent compositional sketch in pen and brown ink, finished with different tonalities of grey wash, on 18th-century laid paper without visible watermark. The drawing is admirable in its economy of means to achieve the full range and depth of the projected stage setting. Gaspare was one of a family of painters from Andorno and Treviglio in northern Italy, many of whom worked in theatrical design in Milan, Turin and Berlin.
