Villa Conti, Frascati: A Family Cooking

Finished, complex scene of a section of the villa with fountain and statues in an arcade, a thatched-roof shed with three figures and a large pot on a fire, signed and dated 1757. Robert went to Italy in 1754. For the location, compare Beau (Dessins d'Hubert Robert au Musée de Valence), Nos. 50 a through g, which date from 1761 through a remembrance drawing of 1775. This sheet, then, is an early study, born out by its rather crowded composition compared to the larger, airier drawings of later years. On laid paper, backed, the backing partially removed.
